The Fool’s Pilgrimage – This Too Shall Pass

Trust is a funny thing—once it’s lost, it can feel impossible to get back.

Or can it?

Earlier today, I was in my back garden, trimming back the sycamore trees that overhang my space. It’s a fruitless task, one that will need repeating again and again. But I enjoy it. There’s something grounding about being in nature, up a ladder, chainsaw in one hand, clippers in the other—doing battle with the trees.

And as I worked, I was reminded of the phrase: This Too Shall Pass.

Every year, these trees shed their leaves, standing bare against the elements, yet unwavering in their existence. They don’t resist, they don’t struggle—they simply are. And when the time is right, they bloom again, stronger, fuller, just as they were meant to. Not because they force growth, but because growth is simply what they do.

This reminds me of one of my favourite meditations, drawn from Matthew 6:25-34—the lilies of the field. The flowers don’t worry about where they are planted, nor do they try to control their surroundings. They simply grow.

And isn’t that a reflection of life?

We often find ourselves in situations we didn’t ask for, circumstances beyond our control. But unlike the trees, unlike the lilies, we have a choice. We can allow stress and uncertainty to consume us, or we can lean into the process, trust in the passage of time, and grow from it.

It’s not always easy. It’s not always immediate. But it’s always a choice.

And what makes that choice a little easier is remembering this: This Too Shall Pass. And when it does, we’ll emerge from it different—stronger, wiser—if we choose to.

Namaste—have a great day. 🙏
