The Fool’s Pilgrimage – Wonder

The Fool’s Pilgrimage – Wonder

Psychologists tell us that negative brain waves—the ones linked to stress, anxiety, and worry—literally operate at a lower frequency. This means that when we’re feeling low, it’s not just in our heads; our entire energy shifts. And negativity is contagious. It only takes one person with  sombre mood to allow that mood to ripple through a group, pulling everyone down into that same heavy state. Before we know it, a whole community can find itself operating at this lower frequency, caught in an unspoken cycle of gloom.

February is an odd month. The shortest of the year. The final stretch of winter, where fatigue sets in, sunlight is still scarce, and the grand hopes of the New Year begin to dissolve into “just another same-old year.” That creeping frustration, the quiet darkness of the mind, can amplify itself until we find ourselves feeling lost, worn out, and uninspired.

When these two forces—negativity and winter weariness—collide, they can catch us in a particularly low state. They can turn even a bright day into something dull and heavy. I know, because I felt it. It’s all too easy to absorb the worries of others, and on a dark, cold, and wet morning, the view from my office window seemed to mirror the fog in my own mind.

But nature has a way of recentering us, of reminding us that ease is our natural state. Trees don’t try to grow—they simply do. The wind doesn’t force itself to blow—it just moves. There is no struggle, only flow.

And so, I made a choice. Instead of sitting in that weighty mood, I walked it out.

Skin is waterproof, but so too is my raincoat and SobeyFitness Urban Gym cap, and they are warmer! —and stepped outside into the crisp wet wintery morning air.

There’s something about walking through the woods that clears the mind. The simple act of being among the trees, feeling the earth beneath my feet, resets something deep within me. It’s not just in my imagination; studies show that being in nature lowers cortisol (the stress hormone) and boosts endorphins and serotonin, those chemical messengers of happiness. That mental clarity we sometimes struggle to grasp? It emerges naturally when we immerse ourselves in the world beyond our screens and ceilings.

Even the air itself is medicine. Fresh oxygen floods the lungs, and the trees release phytoncides, natural compounds that promote relaxation and well-being. And as I walked, something shifted.

I paused mid-step, took in a deep breath, and looked around. The wonder and awe of it all struck me. The woodland, so close to home yet so easily overlooked, was alive with quiet magic. The birds sang their morning chorus, a symphony of nature’s own making, and a smile crept onto my lips. I could feel my energy lifting—those heavy, low frequencies giving way to something lighter, something freer.

Nature, in all its quiet wisdom, has a way of grounding us. It reminds us of who we are beyond our worries, beyond our to-do lists. It reconnects us—to the earth, to ourselves, and to each other. Because in the end, we’re all Pilgrims on this journey of life, and sometimes, that journey is challenging.

There’s nothing wrong with needing to vent, with having a moan, with expressing the weight we sometimes carry. But we must be mindful of those thoughts and words, because they shape our actions and habits. And if our habits define our lives, then we must ask ourselves:

Do we want our actions to be joyful, or to keep us stuck in despair? Do we want to be the greatest version of our grandest vision—or just another Moaning Myrtle?

All feelings are valid. All experiences are part of the journey. But when given the choice, why not choose wonder?

For this day, and the next I know where I want my frequency set – how about you?

Namaste – have a great day. 🙏
